Lage:

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE CRYPT OF THE AUGUSTINER-CHORHERRENSTIFT IN VORAU
WITH A CONTRIBUTION BY SAMUEL GROSS (MAINZ/BRD) AND ARBEO SCHERER-OTTENFELS (KLOSTERNEUBURG)
Situation:
The rooms, today known as the crypt, are located below the collegiate church and Thomas Church on the side between the altar area (apse) and the sacristy. Access to the crypt is via the altar area in front of the church, where a stone slab closes the exit in front of the high altar on the floor.
Room description:
Below the stone slab, laterally in front of the altar, ten steps lead over 2 m into the depth into a 4 m long and over 1 m wide blind passage. By means of geo-radar measurements it could be established that the steps of the exit do not continue here, but that the floor of this part is completely filled with building rubble to a depth of 3.5 m. The steps of the exit are not continued here. However, on the right hand side, immediately after the steps, there is a passage leading into a relatively large lower room (9 x 5 x 1.6 m; crypt room 2). This is divided into two sectors by two pillars, which are formed by the presumably former cross vault (?) on the ceiling. In this vault the assumption is obvious that underneath …
